Initiative's goals and main activities

Our main goal is to reduce the volume of greenhouse gases emitted in Teresina, by composting organic waste that would otherwise end up in the city’s landfill. We aim to change the way Teresina deals with organic waste generated by local inhabitants and businesses. To achieve this goal we offer an on-demand composting service. Through an affordable monthly subscription, our clients can choose one out of our several plans that best fit their needs in terms of the amount of food waste generated and home pickup frequency. We collect and compost their residential or commercial organic waste into high-quality organic fertilizer, of which they receive at least one kilo every month. The fertilizer excess is sold in local green markets, to help us to cover operational costs, or donated to public community gardens. In addition, we offer environmental training to our clients and to local schools. Once per week, local people are invited to visit the composting site and learn about the natural processes that happen there. We also promote thematic events, such as Composting Week, a worldwide event (International Compost Awareness Week - ICAW) that was brought to Brazil by some local initiatives and we were able to promote some activities in Teresina in 2022.

In order to get to the next level, the project needs:

Our project needs to improve its communication strategy, targeting mainly schools, residential complexes and local businesses. We want to inform as many people as possible about climate change and how sustainable waste management is efficient mitigation and adaptation strategy. We also need to increase the capacity of our composting size to collect and compost a larger amount of organic waste. We want to expand our territorial coverage by creating new collection stations throughout the city. In the next few years, we intend to decentralize our strategy by building new composting sites and strengthening other sustainable community-based solutions, such as community gardening.
