Partnerships for Resilience through Innovation and Integrated Management of Emergencies and Disasters (PRIMED)

Frank Nansam-Aggrey, Ghana

Initiative's goals and main activities

  1. Create a long-lasting network of excellence for the co-creation of climate resilience, disaster risk reduction, and development research in the Weija-Gbawe Municipality in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana

  2. Co-develop examples of best practices and resources which improve the leadership skills of community members, and improve their capacity to take action and build their overall resilience to coastal hazards and ability to plan sustainable infrastructure accordingly.

  3. Facilitate information and knowledge sharing on successful applications and models of resilience interventions achieved through improved community partnerships, leadership training, and action-oriented education.

  4. Provide opportunities for network members to collaborate on further proposals for funded research that co-develops solutions for climate-resilient, low carbon, and poverty compatible development

In order for the initiative to get to the next level:

  1. We need more funding to enhance capacity building, especially at the community level engagements e.g. help the communities to develop; community disaster plans, communication plans, and tools.

  2.  Community Learning Centres – at least four community centers will need to be established within existing structures located in selected communities (for example, within offices of community-based NGOs, District Assembly offices, or schools). These will host visual or audio dissemination material and provide a physical space to facilitate engagement with the wider community in order to enhance participation at all levels

  3. Facilitators, who will most likely be linked to ongoing national or local level programs, will receive additional training to support the functioning of the community centers. The selection of the host location and the facilitators will ensure the sustainability of the actions long after the project has been completed.
